Rediscovery, di Kofi Awoonor

Kofi Awoonor (pseudonimo di George Awoonor-Williams) è nato il 13 Marzo del 1935 in Ghana. È un critico letterario e professore di letteratura comparata e ha servito come ambasciatore per il Ghana. È autore di romanzi, opere teatrali, saggi politici, critica letteraria, e diversi volumi di poesia. 

Kofi Awoonor è stato ucciso il 21 settembre 2013 durante un attacco terroristico al Westgate Shopping Mall di Nairobi, in 
Kenya.

Riscoperta

Quando le nostre lacrime asciugarono a riva
e i pescatori riportarono a case i loro strumenti
e i gabbiani fecero ritorno a Bird Island
e le risate dei bambini indietreggiarono davanti alla notte
allora dovevamo perpetuare la comunione che forgiammo
la festa dell'unione al cui rito prendemmo parte
allora dovevamo continuare ad essere gli eterni guardiani
che chiudono le cancellate dei camposanti
e mandano via gli ultimi parenti
non può essere la stessa musica che ascoltammo quella notte
che si perpetua nelle stanze della memoria
è il canto nuovo dei nostri amici spenti
sono gli alleluia che cantiamo noi stessi


Rediscovery

When our tears are dry on the shore
and the fishermen carry their nets home
and the seagulls return to bird island
and the laughter of the children recedes at night
there shall still linger the communion we forged
the feast of oneness whose ritual we partook of
There shall still be the eternal gateman
who will close the cemetery doors
and send the late mourners away
It cannot be the music we heard that night
that still lingers in the chambers of memory
It is the new chorus of our forgotten comrades
and the halleluyahs of our second selves
